How to Find the Best Forwarders?

The best forwarders in logistics have a few standout qualities. Sure, everyone has their own priorities, but some traits just keep coming up when people talk about top-tier forwarders.

Of course PRICE

Price matters, obviously. But among the big-name forwarders, you’ll notice prices don’t jump around much—it's all pretty transparent if you’re moving decent volume.

Watch out for smaller forwarders, though. Sometimes they toss out wild quotes for things like local trucking or warehousing in China, and it can get messy fast.

SERVICE

Service and responsiveness are everything. When you’re fixated on price, it’s easy to forget, but honestly, “you get what you pay for” rings true more often than not.

Work with a company that does what it promises. If they can’t deliver, it’s just not worth the headache.

RECOMMENDATIONS

If someone you trust in the industry recommends a forwarder, that’s a huge plus. Nothing beats a solid referral from someone who’s actually used their service.

FLEXIBILITY

Most shipments go smoothly, but sometimes you need a forwarder who can adapt or offer extra services. That’s where a 3PL (Third Party Logistics Provider) really shines.

They’ve usually got the network for warehousing, trucking, and last-mile delivery. Regular forwarders often can’t help much beyond just moving your freight.

TECHNOLOGY

Tech matters. If your forwarder or 3PL actually uses solid tech, it shows they’re thinking ahead and trying to streamline things.

That usually means lower transaction costs, more automation, and maybe even some savings passed on to you. Real-time updates and clear processes? That’s the dream.
But let’s be real—good tech is rare in logistics. If you find a company that’s nailing this, hang onto them.

EXECUTION

Execution speaks for itself. You’ll only know for sure after they handle your shipments, but you can get a sense from their size, experience, and client list.

KNOWLEDGE OF CUSTOMS, TAXES, REGULATIONS

If you’re shipping internationally, customs can be a nightmare. It’s unpredictable, and sometimes totally out of your forwarder’s hands.

Still, you need someone who knows the ropes. If they show real expertise here, that’s a big win.

ABILITY TO HELP YOU GROW

You want to grow your business, not babysit your shipper. If a forwarder can provide what you need now and down the road, that’s a huge plus.

Your business won’t look the same tomorrow, so pick someone who can keep up.
